Listen Europe

Stoneware, stains, glazes

I have been deeply affected by the war escalating in Ukraine and my work has reflected this dramatic change. My sculptures are now punctured with holes, as if they have been shelled by the physical and informational bombardment of bombs and propaganda. "Listen Europe" is about a shared geographic and cultural experience, speaking to Ukraine's position between Russia and the rest of Europe. The piece is also about the endless talks, negotiations, rumors and bureaucracy ensnaring us into passivity. How many red lines have to be crossed before the West will step up with active support to help Ukrainians win this war? The two figures share another connection by the tumultuous dark blue cloud lurking on top of their heads; the menace of totalitarian regimes that threatens many parts of the world, including Europe.
