Decades ago, in simpler times, I was a potter's apprentice in Japan. Today, in our uncertain world, I pair Momoyama with Post-Modern, as if choreographing the wabi sabi of a Shino-glazed chawan with the dazzling surface of a Lucas Samaras "Reconstruction." In current work, slip-cast forms including that of common toys and/or geometry are staged with detailing and richly glazed surfaces that honor material and fabrication while reminding us of precarious realities.
