Personal decorative papers can come from traditional techniques like paper marbling and paste papers to more contemporary styles using wax resist, tie-dying, rubbings and handmade stamps. Experiment with a wide range of materials, colors and papers to create unique designs.
We'll begin this in-person course with an introduction to paste papers and preparing the paper marbling supplies.
The second day will focus on Japanese decorative techniques. Get ready to pleat, fold, clamp and tie-dye papers into beautiful, repeating patterns with suminagashi (paper marbling), orizomegami (dyeing folding paper), shiborizome (tie dyeing paper).
Turkish paper marbling is the focus for the third day. The floating colors and design potentials are both joyous to produce and an amazing addition to your growing stash of finished papers.
We'll round off our journey with a playful fourth day which will include experimental stamping, botanical printing, wax-resist and more! Create your own stamps for block printing using a wide variety of materials from carved styrofoam and rubber erasers to more natural botanicals. Repeating patterns and unique decorative edges can embellish plain or machine printed papers for a more personal expression. Excellent techniques for book arts, mixed media collage, assemblage, boxmaking or as handmade gift wrap or greeting cards.
$60 materials fee payable to instructor at class.
We have limited the class size for your safety and comfort and to provide more availability of the instructor to each student. You will work at individual desks, spaced well apart in our spacious and airy Plummer Studio. All students must agree to comply with LexArt safety protocols. Bring your own mask. We will provide you with a Face Shield for added protection, which is yours to keep.
