Description:

This is a week-long studio course for students of any level to learn observational painting. We will begin with the basics of how to draw and paint what you are actually seeing by allowing our direct response to our visual and visceral senses to decipher color, light and form, and space, using still life as our subject matter.  We will then explore the full range of painting with this medium through discussion, individual instruction, demonstrations, and examples of the techniques and philosophies of the great still life artists past and present.

Students are enthusiastically encouraged to visit the MFA and other local art museums to study actual paintings close up and present!

Note: Students may use oil paint with odorless mineral spirits if they prefer to paint in this medium. No oil paint mediums may be used in class which have toxic vapors such as turpentine contained in many varnishes. If one is experienced in

this medium and doesn't require longer drying times between layers/applications of paint, this an excellent alternative to acrylics. List of supplies for oil painting by request of the instructor.

Materials:

Students will need to purchase materials on the list here before the start of the class.

This is a 5 day class: Monday, July 11-Friday, July 15
