Description:

Come learn Arashi Shibori. Shibori is the ancient Japanese art of manipulating cloth through tying, stitching, knotting or otherwise securing it, and then dyeing it to achieve specific patterns. Arashi, “storm”, is the name that Japanese have given patterns resist-dyed by a process of wrapping cloth around a pole and compressing it into folds, yielding patterns suggesting rain driven by a strong wind. We will explore two techniques in the class, one using string to bind the fabric, and another without string, which yields a softer pattern. The fabric will then be dyed in an indigo vat. You will bring home two cotton tea towels, suitable for home use. All materials will be provided. No prior experience required.

Note:

-This class is for adults.

-Indigo dyeing can get messy, so dress accordingly. Optionally, bring an apron.

About the instructor:

Laura Bagnall retired in 2023 after over 3 decades in software engineering, while satisfying a life-long love of fabric through hobbies of sewing and costume-making. She took her first class in Shibori in 2023, and was immediately hooked, finding every possible educational resource from Youtube videos, books, and remote and in-person workshops with advanced instructors.

She quickly moved beyond the simple folding and binding techniques covered in that first class to focus on stitching techniques, reflecting her long-time love of sewing. She joined Mystic Open Studios in 2024, and started teaching there that December. She holds a monthly “Community Vat” where she provides an indigo vat and covers the basics of shibori and where more experienced folks can bring projects in to dye. She also periodically teaches workshops on more advanced techniques such as stitched shibori.
