Description:

Geared toward beginners and intermediate painters working in oil and acrylic, though other media are welcome, our group will be limited to 10. Each day will begin with a critique and a demo.  We will then warm up with some quick studies before tackling a variety of landscapes and still lives.  We will work on a new project each class, some from life, and some from photo references provided by the instuctor. The primary focus will be on capturing that beautiful New England winter!

Materials

Students will need to purchase materials on the list for Oils here and for Acrylics here before the start of the class.

About the instructor:

Peter Bain grew up in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, spending summers on Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester.  He lives in Lexington with his wife and two daughters. Peter was first introduced to painting by Cape Ann artist Paul George, and the influence of Cape Ann is apparent in his work.  Boats, rocks, sand, and ocean are featured predominantly in his paintings.  Also, past artists of Cape Ann have had a large influence on him.  Aldro Hibbard and Frederick Mulhaupt are some of Peter’s favorite painters.

Peter’s career as an artist continues to rise. His first show was self staged and promoted at his local library in 2014.  Since that time he regularly shows in juried events and gives gallery demonstrations.  He joined Gallery Twist in the spring of 2018 and is a member of the North Shore Arts Association. Peter captures landscapes, figures, still lives, and animals with equal aplomb. “My goal with each painting is to articulate what is inspiring or moving about the scene or object before me. When I find that aspect, I try to capture it, amplify it on the canvas, and make everything else support it. The challenge is figuring out which features to move, downplay, amplify, blur, or highlight.  I feel my best work not only is a beautiful image with an interesting composition, colors, and values... but one shows the painting process; the brush strokes, the dragged edges, smooth glazes, and thick paint.”  Peter began his painting career at LexArt, taking classes with Paul George, and now Peter’s skills developed to the level where he now has taken up teaching his mentor’s class.   www.pbainart.com
