Students will focus on essential techniques that every beginner should know, starting with the color theory and painting a simple object, progressing to more complex projects. In each class, we’ll spend ~10 minutes on group critique to learn from one another. By the end of the course, students will be able to create a beautiful landscape painting of Mt. Fuji.

About the instructor:

Born and raised in the natural landscapes of Hokkaido, Japan, Eiko Tabata developed an early fascination with visual storytelling. Influenced by anime and comics, she began drawing and creating her own illustrated stories as a child. Though she did not begin painting until adulthood, those early experiences with line, color, and imagination laid the foundation for her artistic voice.

Surrounded by Hokkaido’s mountains, forests, and wildlife, Eiko formed a deep respect for the natural world. She spent much of her childhood hiking mountain trails, cycling around the base of Mt. Yotei, and skiing through long winters. These direct experiences with nature left a lasting impression, shaping the perspective that defines her art today.

A self-taught realism painter working primarily in acrylic and oil, Eiko focuses on landscapes and wildlife that capture nature’s quiet beauty and resilience. Her use of vivid, warm colors has become a signature of her work, expressing both the serenity and strength of her surroundings. Through her paintings, she seeks to remind viewers of the delicate balance that sustains life and the importance of caring for our environment.

Eiko’s work has been exhibited in local libraries, cafés, and galleries, as well as in international spaces such as Galería Azur in Berlin and online platforms like Artsy. She hopes her paintings serve as both celebration and call to awareness, encouraging appreciation, respect, and conservation of the natural world for generations to come.
