Description: This 3-day workshop will introduce the working methods of drawing and painting outside, en plein air. Working from direct observation of our surroundings, we will capture the immediacy and beauty of the landscape around us.  You will learn strategies for setting up to paint outside, deciding what to paint, focusing on working fast and simplification.

This course is open to artists of all experience levels using oils, acrylics, pastels, pencil and/or charcoal. Please bring the materials you wish to work with. You can expect to create 1-2 works of art per day based on your media, canvas size and how fast you typically work. Each day will consist of demonstrations, open painting time with ample one-to-one guidance, and some time for group critique and discussion. We will break for lunch each day. Students of all levels are welcome.

This workshop will be held on the following three dates: July 19th, 20th, and 21st

About the instructor:

Peter Bain grew up in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, spending summers on Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester.  He lives in Lexington with his wife and two daughters.Peter was first introduced to painting by Cape Ann artist Paul George and the influence of Cape Ann is apparent in his work.  Boats, rocks, sand, and ocean are featured predominantly in his paintings.  Also, past artists of Cape Ann have had a large influence on him.  Aldro Hubbard and Frederic Mulhaupt are some of Peter’s favorite painters. Peter’s career as an artist continues to rise. His first show was self staged and promoted at his local library in 2014.  Since that time he regularly shows in juried events and gives gallery demonstrations.  He joined Gallery Twist in the spring of 2018 and is a member of the North Shore Arts Association. He currently teaches painting at the LexArt.Peter captures landscapes, figures, still lives, and animals with equal aplomb. “My goal with each painting is to articulate what is inspiring or moving about the scene or object before me. When I find that aspect, I try to capture it, to amplify it on the canvas, and make everything else support it. The challenge is figuring out which features to move, to downplay, to amplify, to blur, or to highlight.  I feel my best work not only is a beautiful image with an interesting composition, colors, and values….but one shows the painting process; the brush strokes, the dragged edges, smooth glazes, and thick paint.”

Peter began his painting career at LexArt, taking classes with Cape Ann artist Paul George. Peter’s skills developed to the level where he now shows at several galleries and has taken up teaching his mentor’s class. The influence of Cape Ann is apparent in Peter’s work. Boats, rocks, sand, and ocean are featured predominantly in his paintings. Peter has developed into a notably versatile painter; capturing landscapes, figures, still lives, and animals with equal aplomb. Peter lives in Lexington with his wife and two daughters.  www.pbainart.com
