Description:

Join us at LexArt for an exciting outdoor firing experience! Modern raku is a low fire smoking process that produces a variety of unique colors and textures on bisque pottery when pieces are pulled from the kiln. The thermal shot creates the cracks for crackle glaze and the reduction atmosphere allows the possibility of wide range of colors with a single glaze. This workshop will allow participants to create work in the first session and participate in a Raku firing on the second session.

Students are expected to have some basic knowledge of clayworking skills. Each student is limited to five pieces for this class.

Note:

-This class takes place on the following dates: September 14 (Session 1), September 18 (Session 2), September 26 (Session 3), and September 28 (Session 4).

-The raindate for Session 4 (the outdoor firing) is September 29.

Additional notes:

-Sessions 1 and 2 will be spent making pieces for the Raku firing. Session 3 will be for glazing your work, and Session 4 is for firing pieces outdoors. Please dress appropriately by wearing cotton clothing, long sleeves and pants.

About the instructor:

Chin Lin started pottery in the early 1980's.  In addition to teaching at LexArt, he has taught pottery classes at MIT Student Arts Association, Ceramics Studio at UC Berkeley as well as Sorenson Center for the Arts at Babson College over the last thirty years. Chin is a registered architect by training but his art work has been accepted in the American Craft Council's flagship show at Baltimore for both wholesale and retail shows. He is known for making large forms.

Jasmine Lipman began her clay journey in 1997 at the University of Arts Philadelphia, and has found herself occupied by the endless possibilities of the medium ever since. Her interest has taken her to LexArt, where she has been for the past 8 years and currently serves as the Ceramics Studio Manager. Her favorite thing about ceramics is the versatility and non-restrictiveness of its multi-step process.

Please take a look at our registration policy and our current covid policy before your class.
