Description:

Light Painting is an artistic photographic technique for creating images using a combination of lights and movement. In some cases the lights are moving and in other cases, the camera is moving. This class is intended for those who own DSLR or mirrorless cameras who would like a gentle introduction to light painting. We will be working in an indoor studio with small lights, allowing us to practice techniques that can apply to larger, outdoor projects, but without the discomforts of being outdoors on a cold night.

This class involves two online sessions (on February 4th and 12th) and one in-studio session (on February 7th). The first session, over Zoom, will provide an introduction to different forms of light painting and an overview of the techniques that we will use in the studio session. The second session will be an in-studio experience with a variety of different light painting setups, allowing you to experiment with the instructor's collection of light-painting tools. We will follow up with an online image review session that will include a discussion of different strategies for editing light painting images.

Prerequisites:

To take this class you will need a camera that can be used in manual mode (DSLR or Mirrorless). No night photography or light painting experience is necessary, but you should know how to adjust the shutter speed, f-stop, and ISO settings on your camera.

Note:

-The Zoom link will be provided prior to the class.

-This class takes place on the following dates: February 4th, February 7th, and February 12th.

About the instructor:

Shehab Hossain: I am a visual artist specializing in urban night photography, particularly light painting. My work transforms familiar cityscapes into otherworldly scenes. I use long exposures to illuminate objects and locations, manipulating light and shadow to create dramatic compositions.

Inspired by science fiction, I incorporate light-painted orbs as portals to imagined dimensions. These glowing spheres, meticulously crafted within abandoned spaces, invite viewers on a journey beyond the ordinary. My approach blends theatrical techniques with cinematic framing, guiding the eye through layers of light and shadow.

I explore the interplay of artificial and ambient light, capturing the essence of time and place. My award-winning photographs have been exhibited internationally and are featured in private collections worldwide. I currently reside and practice my art in Boston, Massachusetts.
