Description:

This workshop will give the participants the opportunity to explore various ways to decorate the surface of their pottery using silk screens.
1. The workshop will discuss what surfaces features are best for transferring the image, and various ways to be successful on curved surfaces, and what types of images are suitable for silk screen printing.
2. The workshop will include a demonstration of making silk screens using a pre-emulsified mesh silk screen printing sheets such as EZscreens. It will also include demonstrations on: Printing directly on greenware or bisque ware tiles, printing using a gelli pad or using newsprint or rice paper to transfer a silk screened image onto the tiles.
3. The students will use silk screens, Amaco inks, rice or newsprint paper and gelli pad to decorate tiles.
4. After the pieces have been bisque fired, participants can glaze their work during the open studio time.
Materials: Students should bring the following supplies to class:
· Red potter’s rib
· Yellow potter’s rib
· Small sponge
· Various paint brushes
Prerequisites:
Although participants would benefit from having some basic knowledge of clay, the workshop is suitable for potters of all levels that are interested decorating the surface of their pottery.
Additional notes:
-This class is for ages 16 and up.
-Students will have access to Open Studios on Thursday, November 6th, to glaze their work. If you are a registered student and that date does not work for you, reach out to education@lexart.org to coordinate another day with the Ceramics Studio.
About the instructor:
Dianne is a retired special education teacher who started taking pottery in 2015 at Lexington Arts and Crafts. She soon fell in love with the creative process of creating beauty out of mud. Dianne became fascinated by the various ways she could decorate the surfaces of her pottery with Sgrafitto, carving, painting and silk screening.
