Description: In this workshop, we will explore saggar and open saggar firing of ceramic objects decorated
with soluble salts. Students will use iron, cobalt, and potassium dichromate, in concentrations ranging from 10% to 20%.
Class 1:
We will prepare terra sigillata from ball clay and decorate all pieces with terra sigillata. The work
will then be bisque fired. During this session, we will also prepare sponge stamps.
Class 2:
We will apply iron chloride, cobalt sulfate, and potassium dichromate to the work, and further
decorate with table salt and/or calcium chloride. The pieces will then be fired —some in
aluminum saggars and some in LexArt's outdoor smoke and Raku kilns.
Class 3:
We will unload the kilns and apply wax to the finished work.
Note:
-This class takes place on the following three dates: April 6th (10AM-2PM), April 8th (10AM-3PM), and April 10th (10AM-12PM).
