About the Class or Event

5 Sessions, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM

Begins July 18, Indoors - Meets in Ceramic Studio

Skills Level: All

Class: $338

Description: This class is a five session workshop with master potter Shamai Gibsh. Shamai will demonstrate Terra Sigillata preparation.  The class will explore a layering technique of various colored terra sigillata, application of masking tape and additional colored terra sigillata. Students will also learn the "smoke print" technique and work with Iron Chloride in the Raku kiln,  and saggar using  aluminum foil. There will also be electric kiln milk firing. Lastly, students will prepare brew for Obvara & Fire Obvara.

Prerequisites:

-Students will have to have read chapters 1, 3, 4, 9, and 10 of Shamai Gibsh's book, "Smoke, Fire and Clay," before the first class. If you would like to purchase the book click here.

-Participants are to bring 7 pieces, all bone dry; 3 pieces for the layering terra sigillata technique, 2 for the soluble iron aluminum saggar, and 2 for the milk firing. All work should be vertical in form and no larger than 6” in height. In addition Shamai recommends that you bring 6” square tiles for additional tests. For best results work should be burnished as smooth as possible with a red silicone rib.

-Additionally, participants are to bring 3 bisqued pieces (made using raku clay). They should not be taller or wider than 6", and having a textured surface adds to the unique decorative effect.

Note: The indoor sessions of this workshop take place on the following four dates: July 18th, July 20th, July 22nd, and July 24th. Obvara on July 25th will take place outside at LexArt.
