Description: Enameling is an old art of adding color to metal. Enamel is really finely crushed glass powder that we add on to copper or fine silver sheet, use a kiln or a torch to heat up the fine glass dust so that it melts into a smooth, glossy surface on the metal surface. We will experiment by firing color enamels on copper with a torch and more elaborate enamel designs that will be heated in a kiln. We will do basic patterns using transparent and opaque enamels. We will experiment with several enameling techniques such as champlevé, cloisonné and experimental enameling. We will make samples of each color of opaque and transparent enamel powder and then use copper and fine silver to enamel various designs.
Prerequisites:
-Some basic soldering/jewelry making experience is necessary for this workshop.
Note:
-Due to glass powder, students should bring their own respirator, a N95 mask, or surgical mask, to avoid inhaling glass powder.
-Copper and enameling materials are provided. However, students may also bring in any copper or fine silver sheet metal, any enamel powder they have, and basic hand tools as needed.
