Description: This summer at LexArt you will have an oppertunity to learn from the renowned South African potter Clive Sithole. Bring a smooth, burnished bisqued piece to fire in a barrell or open air with sawdust and others materials. Clive will teach a master smoke fire class, showing you techniques to prep your work before firing. The techniques will create a range of wonderful smoke fire effects. Your work will be fired outside during the class and unloaded after it cools down.
Materials: Bring a bisqued piece to fire.
About the instructor:
Clive was born in Soweto, South Africa. He earned a post-graduate diploma at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2007, and has since been honored with many national awards. He has led workshops internationally, traveling to Nigeria to study the Udu ceramic drum, and to the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, England, to work with Magdalene Odundo. Clive explores social issues of land, race, politics and culture in his work, utilizing traditional Zulu techniques, symbols, and firing techniques to enhance his work. He has exhibited his work internationally and is included in collections in museums in South Africa, Germany, Denmark, and the United States.
