Description:

This two session workshop will teach students at all levels to use hand tools and some basic jigs to make an asanoha pattern, a flower pattern used in traditional Japanese panels. The Kumiko is hand cut and fitted precisely, using no glue. The resulting patterns can be used in many ways, from handmade lamp insets to decorative coasters. During the class, students will hand cut all their own materials. Each student will leave with a Kumiko of their own making.

This class  is specifically designed to accommodate and welcome people with a range of neurodiversities including ASD, ADHD, and other types of thinking across the spectrum. The instructor himself is neurodivergent, and wishes to create a communally supportive class for his students. Students may contact the instructor beforehand to discuss ways to best facilitate their learning experience.

About the instructor: Palo Coleman grew up in Northern California where he spent a lot of time in the woods, taught himself building skills and developed an interest in small-scale living. Now living with his wife and family in Cambridge, he continues to experiment in myriad woodworking techniques and is a tiny-house builder. Past projects include a living playground in Waitsfield, Vermont’s elementary school; making a vertical garden system; constructing medieval games for the Fuller Craft Museum; and developing a portable studio with Japanese-wood siding. He has an obsession with how things work and are put together, and he likes to bring that obsession into classroom and woodworking shop.
