- “Guess Who I Saw Today,” curated by Ashleigh Coren: Sept 21-Oct 31, 2023
Newton, MA– Join New Art Center in a fun, collaborative artwork & happening as part of the exhibition “Guess Who I Saw Today,” curated by Ashleigh Coren and featuring the work of artists DaNice Marshall, Ivan Brens, and Matt Brackett. The opening of the exhibition will take place at New Art Center Trio Corridor Gallery Thursday, September 21, 2023 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. We are asking individuals to take a moment to reflect on those who cross their paths daily – the people we know, and those we don’t. Participants stationed across Greater Boston will gather names and locations of those on similar paths. The fragments of info collected will be assembled into a collaborative artwork in the upstairs of the Trio Gallery and on display the night of the opening reception. Artists Ashleigh Coren (she/her) is a museum interpreter in Washington, D.C. Her writing has been published in The Journal of American Folklore, Viewfinder: Reflecting Upon Museum Education, and the International Review of African American Art. She also serves on the Board for the Museum Education Roundtable. Ivan Brens is a self-taught painter born in the Dominican Republic. He studied printmaking and photography at the University of Massachusetts and sculpture in Mass College of Art in Boston. The artwork has an emphasis upon distortion of the human form resembling the struggle and distress for freedom. DaNice Marshall started painting abstracts, mostly to watch the paint dry – before discovering portraiture as a way for her to paint the stories that she could no longer write. Matt Brackett uses techniques of traditional painting to explore themes such memory, wonder and menace through a contemporary lens. His imagery, while realist in appearance, is derived from completely artificial constructs. - Call for Art: HOME- October 28 to November 19, 2023
Community arts organization, LexArt and LexHAB, a Lexington-based affordable housing organization, collaborate on a joint art exhibition titled “HOME” that links both missions. The juried show will run from October 28 through November 19, 2023 at the Nye Gallery in Lexington, MA. The show is open to artists in New England working in all media. The exhibit, HOME, will focus on the essential role housing plays in our lives and the importance of affordable housing. Whether it is a physical place or an idea, ‘home’ can mean something different at each stage of life and varies by culture and geography. Housing as shelter is a universal human need that is inaccessible for too many, locally and globally. A shelter is a need, a house can be a haven, a nest can be empty, a home can be inhabitable: climate change, income inequality, racism, violence, love, community, and family are just a few of the factors that impact our concept of home and our ability to attain and maintain a home. We invite you to reflect on this theme and to submit a work of art that shares your perspective on the notion of ‘home’. Juror: Sarah Morrison is an award-winning artist whose work includes painting, printmaking and collage. She exhibits locally and nationally. Her work is available at 13Forest Gallery in Arlington and CLAY Art and Concept in West Concord. A member of LexArt, Sarah is the Executive Director of LexHAB, an affordable housing organization in Lexington. Sarah studied Studio Art and English Literature at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, and Syracuse University in Florence, Italy. Her graduate studies at Hunter College School of Social Work in New York City focused on Social Policy and Community Organizing. As a social worker, Sarah concentrates on the overlapping issues of homelessness, poverty, and affordable housing. Her artwork is informed by the transient, temporal beauty of daily life and the interplay between humans, the natural world and our man-made environment, including social and political issues. Her approach to art making is spontaneous, experimental, and experiential. Throughout her career, she has combined the arts with social justice work. To submit items for consideration, see the Submission Guidelines attached to this email or click here. Please note that we ask that you pay the Entry Fee here before submitting images (LexArt members get a 50% discount on the entry fee). - July 22, 2023–July 28, 2025: Tender Loving Care Contemporary Art from the Collection at the MFA
At their core, creating and looking at works of art are acts of care, from the artist’s labor to the viewer’s contemplation and appreciation. Storage, conservation, and display are also ways of tending to art. This exhibition invites visitors to explore how contemporary artists trace and address concepts of care through their materials, subjects, ideas, and processes. More than 100 works from the MFA’s collection—including recent acquisitions and objects that have never been on view before—define, depict, and demonstrate many forms of care through five thematic groupings: threads, thresholds, rest, vibrant matter, and adoration. Gisela Charfauros McDaniel’s portrait of her mother, Tiningo’ si Sirena (2021), moves between intimacy and an attentiveness to larger concepts that are meaningful to the artist, like cultural inheritances and ecological interconnectivity. For his Sound Suit (2008), Nick Cave extended the lifespan of discarded objects by transforming them into a surreal, otherworldly costume that asserts the value of Black life. The intensive time and labor that goes into creating textiles and fiber art is evident in examples by Sheila Hicks, Howardena Pindell, and Jane Sauer. Through these works and many others visitors can consider how different forms of care may inspire new models for living and feeling—now and in the future. Please Be Seated Throughout “Tender Loving Care,” visitors are invited to take a moment for rest and contemplation. Please Be Seated began at the MFA in 1975 and was the first museum program in the country to commission contemporary artists to make benches and chairs for visitor use that were also acquired into the Museum’s collection. These objects transcend the traditional observational relationship between works of art and their audience, instead becoming active participants in providing care for museumgoers. https://www.mfa.org/exhibition/tender-loving-care?utm_source=dm_exhibitions&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=ex-tlc&utm_content=version_A&promo=51157

- Call For Artists - Chatham Festival - Cape Co Fine Arts and Crafts Festival Sept. 9th and 10th, 2023
A Call to Artists – We are contacting you because you most likely know some quality artists that may be interested in exhibiting and selling their works at the Chatham Fine Arts Festival we are hosting. This show is not an average festival – vendors always comment on how successful this location has been for them. Highlights of why we chose this venue: As an award winning designer (Goldsmith vendor) at this location I have sold $2-5k per day of quality jewelry year after year. Proving that the visitors are willing to make substantial purchases. Free on-site parking lot. We are actively recruiting quality artists and crafts people to build an exciting display of works. The venue is located 2 feet from the side walk on the busiest street in town (Main Street). The festival is highly visible and accessible from the street and parking lot. Sandy beaches, quality restaurants, and unique shops draw people from surrounding areas. September is the biggest month for Chatham weddings which draws extra shoppers. Some of the finest inns are located in Chatham bringing visitors that wish to browse. Chatham has the highest median income on Cape Cod and has a large population of art loving residents. This is a great location to sell quality art or obtain commission work. Other fairs have been at this location for years - the parking lot is always full from visitors. Chatham police will be directing traffic and be on-site for overnight security. The event is listed by two major news sources (Cape Cod Times and The Enterprise) under local events. The event is listed on google local Chatham events and many other websites that show Cape Cod events. We will continue to market and heavily promote the event as the date approaches. We are contacting a few New England key people that are involved with art creation or have connections to the art community. Our goal is to reach a larger audience of talented individuals. We want artists and creators of unique works. We hope you can help connect us with some quality people. We are limiting artists in categories so that the festival is not saturated by a few types of art. Therefore visitors and exhibitors will enjoy the event’s opportunities to the fullest. - Vibrant Harmony- June 17 to July 1, 2023
Namhi Kim Wagner - Memorial Retrospective Ceramics Exhibition Jun 17 - Jul 1, 2023 | Reception Sat Jun 17 3-5pm Korean Cultural Society of Boston is pleased to present Namhi Kim Wagner’s Retrospective Exhibition in memory of her passing at the age of 99 in March 2023. The exhibition will feature delicate plates with vibrant stamped patterns, swelling jars encircled with floral carving, and large bowls overflowing with big happy fish and lotuses. Born in Korea, raised in Japan, and returning to Korea after her first marriage, Namhi lived through both World War II and the Korean War. Widowed at age 35 with three young children, she emigrated to the United States to work at the Harvard Yenching Library, later becoming the first Director of the Korean Language Program at Harvard. At age 48, she found her deep passion for ceramics. First studying briefly at the MIT Pottery Studio and then joining the Harvard Ceramics Program Studio (formerly Radcliffe), she was an artist-in-residence there from 1997-2004. Often teaching all day and staying up all night to master ceramic techniques, it was in rediscovering her own roots that led her to truly find her own voice. Here, her resilient spirit found expression in her modern interpretation of the dynamic yet playful style of 15-16th century Korean Buncheong ware. I discovered my own voice as well as my roots by exploring the expressive possibilities of the Korean Buncheong tradition in my pots. Buncheong could not be more Korean, down-to-earth, unpretentious, and exuberant. It is the unfettered spontaneity and rhythmic grace of Bungheong ware that I love most. Stamps are impressed randomly all over the surface and lines are incised freely. The patterns appear to be disorganized and yet they coalesce into a vibrant harmony. It warms my heart and makes me smile to look at some pieces that appear to be have been made by a child, so innocent charming and natural - Namhi Kim Wagner Always an educator, Namhi was also instrumental in sharing the rich history of Korean ceramics with the greater Boston community through her own entertaining presentations at major museums and studios and by acting as a translator for visiting artists. Her work has been exhibited in the United States, Europe, and Korea and is in the collections of the Harvard Museums and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
