Organized by the Cape Ann Plein Air Board of Directors, comprised of members from the Greater Cape Ann’s leading arts and culture organizations, the communities will see up to 38 of the finest artists in the nation compete for over $20,000 in prizes and awards while raising awareness of the importance of plein air painting and raising the visibility of the creative economy on Cape Ann, the birthplace of American Plein Air painting. • Community Arts Initiative: From Farm to Craft Table at the MFA

May 13–October 22, 2023 For “From Farm to Craft Table,” mixed-media artist Alexandra Adamo and children from twelve Boston-area community organizations learned about the wonders of wool. Starting their journey at Waltham Fields Community Farm, they built relationships with wool-bearing animals right outside the city. This gave them an appreciation for the sheep wool they used as they worked together to create a community “garden” of felt tendrils and roots, abstract vessels, a paint patchwork quilt, and needle felt sculptures. These individual components come together in this exhibition to form a vast landscape of blended green wools, dangling root systems, and blossoming seeds—each element representing a child and their hopes for how they’d like to grow in the community they’ve developed. We all experienced a lack of grounding and togetherness during the COVID-19 pandemic, but through this therapeutic collaboration, Adamo and the young artists regained their footing by laying down seeds and roots. A Community Tradition “From Farm to Craft Table” marks the 18th year of the Community Arts Initiative, through which the MFA partners with community organizations to introduce young people ages 6 to 12 to the Museum’s collection and the art-making process. For this exhibition, through the Community Arts Initiative, the Museum is proud to partner with Berkshire Partners Blue Hill Boys & Girls Club, Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, Charlestown Boys & Girls Club, Condon Boys & Girls Club, Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester, Edgerley Family South Boston Boys & Girls Club, Jordan Boys & Girls Club, Sociedad Latina, United South End Settlements, Vine Street Community Center, West End House Boys & Girls Club of Allston-Brighton, and Yawkey Boys & Girls Club of Roxbury. https://www.mfa.org/exhibition/community-arts-initiative-from-farm-to-craft-table

  • THIS EARTH Curated by Stefan Hagen

Concord Art is pleased to announce, THIS EARTH, curated by Stefan Hagen. Hagen is the founder of the Montello Foundation Artist Residency in Nevada. This is a solitary residency in the Nevada Desert for artists who foster our understanding of the fragility of nature and the need to protect it. Their works examines themes like human impact and the fragility of nature, the mediums in the show include photography, painting, sculpture, poetry, video, puppetry, music and fragrance. The guiding principals of this exhibition are based on the 32 artists’ various approaches and personal relationships to nature. Some artists work in the great tradition of observing nature as listeners and note-takers, others work with natural elements and materials, transforming them with their practice. Another group focuses on the impact humans have on the natural world in well meaning and devastating ways. Henry David Thoreau’s response to his environment at Walden Pond in Concord has often been likened to an artist retreat or residency. Like Thoreau, these Montello artists key to understanding their subject matter is through uninterrupted observation and assimilation of experience, thus the importance of being submersed in a solo retreat. Exhibition Opening: March 30, 2023 Exhibition End Date: May 7 https://concordart.org/exhibition/this-earth/

  • Reflections: 2023 Earth Month Exhibition

2023 Earth Month Exhibition April 5 – 23, 2023 Artists Reception, Wed, April 12 - 5PM-7PM The Umbrella Arts Center Main Gallery Reflections: Listening to Nature Nature is full of reflections produced by light, water, and rocks. It is often the quality of light on a surface, of saturated color, or the whispers of a breeze that invite moments of personal reflection. Instances of being still and watching animals go about their daily activity. When we spend time in nature, how do the arts help us listen and learn? How do we share this experience with others through the arts? It’s common to feel disconnected from the climate change data, yet rebuilding connections between each other and the natural world is essential to sparking collective action. Frequently referred to as a universal language, art can be the bridge between the hard reality of climate change, and the emotions we need to feel to take action. How has the way that we relate to the natural world created this crisis we find ourselves in? When we attune our senses to our local ecosystem, what can we learn? Whether one uses the arts as an outlet, a way to deepen your connections to the environment, or a tool for change, we encouraged our community members to submit artworks responding to the theme Reflections for this year's non-juried Earth Month Exhibit, which will run in The Umbrella Arts Center gallery from April 5 through April 23, 2023. This exhibition featuring more than 100 works was the breathtaking response! https://theumbrellaarts.org/reflections-2023-earth-month-exhibition More about Earth Month at The Umbrella

  • Refugee Artisans of Worcester Show: October 8 to October 30, 2022

The Refugee Artisans of Worcester (RAW) helps refugees gain self-sufficiency through the sale of their artwork. With craft as our common language, LexArt brings RAW artisans to our community. 100% of realized gallery sales supports RAW artisans. Worcester is one of 27 cities throughout the US that support the relocation and assimilation of international refugees. Founded in 2010 by Worcester residents Ellen Ferrante and Joan Kariko, Refugee Artisans of Worcester (RAW) is a unique non-profit project that works to support refugees and assist them to self-sufficiency through the sale of their artwork, while archiving their heritage and cultural crafts. RAW artisans originate from the African, Asian and Central American countries of Afghanistan, Bhutan, Burma, Burundi, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guatemala, Honduras, Iraq, Kenya, Liberia, Nepal, Rwanda, Pakistan, Syria and Vietnam. RAW embraces and promotes the cultural diversity of Worcester, recognizes the beauty of the refugee populations’ traditional craft, the economic opportunity that craft practice provides them, the therapeutic value of refugees working with their hands and engaging in their traditional craft in a foreign land, the dignity afforded them as a result, as well as the merits of assimilation given refugees through engaging in the business of producing and marketing their craft, managing their resources and engaging the English-speaking population. RAW works with many (69) non-profits and social services in Worcester. These organizations update RAW on recent refugees and provide contact information for RAW to get in touch with potential artisans. RAW complements the many refugee resettlement programs in the city by seeking community awareness and assistance. LexArt seeks to introduce the RAW non-profit project and its artisans to our community and foster a supportive environment with traditional craft as our common language. We hope it is the first of many such collaborations. One hundred percent of realized gallery sales will support RAW artisans.
