Submission details and entries can be made here Juror: Emily Belz Emily Belz is an independent photographer, educator, and curator based in Lincoln, MA. Her photographs focus on domestic still lifes and durational studies of place, telling stories through the traces, objects, and slants of light that have been left behind. Belz has exhibited her photographs widely in both solo and group exhibitions at venues including Gallery Kayafas, the Danforth Museum, and the Newport Art Museum. She is represented by Gallery Kayafas in Boston. Belz holds a BA in photography and art history from Hampshire College (1997); an MA in community-based art education from the Rhode Island School of Design (2009); and an MFA from the New Hampshire Institute of Art (2017). She teaches classes and workshops at the Griffin Museum of Photography (Winchester, MA) and the deCordova Museum (Lincoln, MA), and is on the faculty at Lasell University (Newton, MA). Belz works privately with artists as a mentor, and specializes in reviewing and sequencing portfolios. With 20+ years in the art world, Belz brings this experience to her role as juror for local art competitions with organizations including the South Shore Art Center, the Plymouth Center for the Arts, and the Arlington Center for the Arts where she is also a Board Member. She enjoys curating exhibitions in collaboration with emerging artists working in all media in the Boston area.

As one of the busiest public library buildings in Massachusetts, our two galleries are highly sought after, well-loved by library patrons and prominently located on the first floor. We welcome applications from New England region artists showing works that are compatible with the Walker Display system. Chinese Painting Demostration Join us May 7th from 2pm - 4pm for a special demonstration led by LexArt member and renowned Chinese Painter Son-Mey Chiu. Son-Mey learned Chinese Painting and Calligraphy during her youth in Hong Kong. In addition to teaching Chinese Painting at a number of prestigious schools such as the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Son-Mey has exhibited her work both internationally and locally. Locally, her work has been shown in the Currier Gallery, the Addison Gallery, the DeCordova Museum, the Worcester Art Museum and Harvard University. She has also been the recipient of a number of both international and national awards. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn the art of Chinese Painting from a true master! New Art Center: Newton Dates: 5/7 Details: Sunday, 1 Session Times: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM Learn the basics of glass fusing techniques and play with colored glass pieces, glass powders and frits, stringers and glass beads. You’ll design and create two 6” x 6” dishes and one large serving dish; channel plate, 8″ x 8″ square or 8″ circle. All materials are provided. Safety note: wear closed toe shoes, safety glasses or reading glasses. Teens are welcome to register if accompanied by a registered participating adult. Introducing the Craft Innovation Jumpstarter In 2023, the Society of Arts + Crafts will award four (4) grants of $3,000 each: two (2) in the summer and two (2) in the winter. The application deadlines are June 5, for the summer awards and November 5 for the winter awards. The purpose of the grants is to support craft artists who reside in New England to pursue new directions or advance new ideas in their work. The goal of increasing equity, inclusion and diversity in the craft field will be an important focus of the program. Eligibility Requirements for Craft Innovation Jumpstarter RESIDENCY: Applicants must reside in New England (defined as Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont). PURSUING INNOVATION: The goal of the Society’s Craft Innovation Jumpstarter Program is to financially support craft artists who are pursuing ideas in their studio practice that represent something new for them. Examples of this are: – introducing a different craft medium; – incorporating a new tool into your craft practice or using an old tool in new ways; – taking a new approach to craft education; – an area not listed here (artist will be asked to specify). Successful applicants will demonstrate achievement in and commitment to their craft or crafts. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: Applications are accepted year-round. To be considered for our summer award cycle, applications must be received by June 5, 2023. To be considered for our winter award cycle, applications must be received by Nov. 5, 2023. Required files include up to 10 images of current work (72 dpi minimum, JPG or PNG file types) and PDFs of the applicant’s response to the following prompts (1,000 words maximum). Fuller Craft Museum June 24 , 2023 - November 5 , 2023 Joyce J. Scott: Messages celebrates the renowned career of Joyce J. Scott, an acclaimed Baltimore artist who for over three decades has elevated the possibilities of beadwork as a relevant contemporary art form. Scott uses off-loom hand-threaded beads and blown glass to create arresting jewelry, figurative sculptures, and wall hangings informed by her African American ancestry, the craft traditions of her family (including her quilter mother Elizabeth T. Scott), and traditional Native techniques, such as the “peyote” stitch. Scott’s subject matter, whether social and political commentary, violence, gender, or human relationships, reflects the artist’s narrative of what it means to be Black in America. Fuller Craft Museum May 13, 2023 - March 3, 2024 Material Mapping: Data-driven Sculpture by Adrien Segal & Norwood Viviano features two artists working at the intersection of information and craft. Using a range of materials, from glass to wood to steel, Adrien Segal and Norwood Viviano transform data into tactile, sculptural forms. Segal seeks to bridge the divide between scientific observation and emotional engagement, with objects that examine disruptions to our natural environment. Also responding to change, Viviano creates artwork that materializes industry-related population shifts. Description Cape Ann Plein Air 2022 was another success! We presented $22,000 in prize money and made a donation from the proceeds of painting sales to the Cape Ann Community Foundation to support local art students. And now we are poised to start all over again! Gloucester is celebrating its 400th anniversary in 2023, and CAPA will be a big part of that all year long! For nearly two centuries, Cape Ann, Massachusetts has been a destination for some of the finest painters who paint en plein air. Throughout its four picturesque seaside communities, Cape Ann Plein Air will host its seventh annual week-long plein air painting celebration in October when the famous Cape Ann light shines at its very best. Organized by the Cape Ann Plein Air Board of Directors, comprised of members from the Greater Cape Ann’s leading arts and culture organizations, the communities will see up to 38 of the finest artists in the nation compete for over $20,000 in prizes and awards while raising awareness of the importance of plein air painting and raising the visibility of the creative economy on Cape Ann, the birthplace of American Plein Air painting. The work produced will be sold at the Grand Awards Gala on Saturday, October 14th, 2023 and the sale will continue until Sunday at 3PM. Artists have been applying for the 7th Annual Cape Ann Plein Air Art Festival and Competition for the last few months and applications are due April 30th! Chestnut Hill Square in Chestnut Hill MA is home to Wegman’s, Soul Cycle, Sweet Green, Anthropologie, Equinox and many other high-end retailers. Developed and managed by New England Development, this outdoor mall has also become a home for public art projects, one of which can be seen above. The New Art Center, on behalf of Chestnut Hill Square, seeks an artist or artist team to develop and install a site- specific work of temporary public art to enhance the visitor experience. To be installed in August 2023 and on view through December 2023, the project should be designed to be maintained and to withstand the elements. $8,000 for an artist/artist team, inclusive of all project development, material, supplies, building, installation and maintenance. Deadline: 11:59 PM, Sunday, May 8, 2023 Eligibility The competition is open to established professional artists living in the Northeast who are able to deliver, install and maintain the project for the full installation duration. Only professional artists with reviewable portfolios are eligible. The artist selection panel will consider artistic diversity as one factor in the selection process. May 13–October 22, 2023 For “From Farm to Craft Table,” mixed-media artist Alexandra Adamo and children from twelve Boston-area community organizations learned about the wonders of wool. Starting their journey at Waltham Fields Community Farm, they built relationships with wool-bearing animals right outside the city. This gave them an appreciation for the sheep wool they used as they worked together to create a community “garden” of felt tendrils and roots, abstract vessels, a paint patchwork quilt, and needle felt sculptures. These individual components come together in this exhibition to form a vast landscape of blended green wools, dangling root systems, and blossoming seeds—each element representing a child and their hopes for how they’d like to grow in the community they’ve developed. We all experienced a lack of grounding and togetherness during the COVID-19 pandemic, but through this therapeutic collaboration, Adamo and the young artists regained their footing by laying down seeds and roots. A Community Tradition “From Farm to Craft Table” marks the 18th year of the Community Arts Initiative, through which the MFA partners with community organizations to introduce young people ages 6 to 12 to the Museum’s collection and the art-making process.
