- Free & Not A Slave: The Legacy of Margaret Tulip to February 5th - 27th, 2022
Free & Not A Slave: The Legacy of Margaret Tulip is a multi-media installation that invites visitors to engage with historic questions about Black history and women’s history through the lens of the arts. Margaret Tulip was an 18th century Lexingtonian with Black and Indigenous ancestry who lived before, during and after the Battle of Lexington. She was a woman, mother, and grandmother who experienced periods of enslavement as a child and adult, followed by legally attaining her freedom, then was “unjustly taken” and re-enslaved by a community member from a prominent family. Margaret pursued her freedom in the courts, lost in the first round, appealed, and won. As LexSeeHer works to make women visible, they are collaborating with LexArt and Lexington Historical Society during Black History Month to launch a year-long exploration of Margaret Tulip's life, her community and her legacy. Works on display include “A Dress For Margaret”, the interactive “Tied To Her Apron Strings”, “I, Too, Am A Child”, “Depositions: For And Against”, “Desk Set”, “Silhouettes” and 2021 Women’s Visibility Banners honoring Sylvia Ferrell-Jones, Leona Martin, and Mary Elizabeth Bibb as well as other African American Lexingtonian women. - Summer Surprise: NESA Show, July 16 to August 7, 2022
The New England Sculptors Association was founded in 1948. NESA has over 150 professional sculptor members, emerging sculptors and Friends of NESA from 7 states. Although the Association has no brick and mortar presence, they partner with local galleries, museums, historical sites, and communities to bring sculpture in all its amazing forms to the public, living up to their tagline of “bringing sculptures to communities”. LexArt, under the leadership of new Executive Director Matthew Siegal, has reinvigorated and expanded its mission of community arts and so found a partnership with NESA a natural fit. Siegal contacted Elisa Adams, the president of NESA,and invited NESA to host a show. Summer Surprise will feature contemporary sculpture created exclusively by NESA members. The exhibition will be open from July 16th through August 7th. The exhibition was juried by fellow local sculptors and LexArt patrons, Alison Lauriat and Molly Nye, along with Matthew Siegel. It includes 35 works by 23 artists, including Turkish Towel by Josie Dellenbaugh, evoking lazy summer days at the beach, and Leaves of Grass by Cassie Doyon, with the brilliant colors of the season. - Weaving Air: A Workshop Overview of Lace Weaves
Pioneer Valley Weavers Two-day Workshop, April 22nd and 23rd, 9AM-4PM All levels welcome and accommodated Florence Civic Center, Florence MA (Florence is part of Northampton, where Webs is located) Cost for both days including handout fee, $225. Lace weaves magically allow the weaver to bend the grid, creating holes to allow air and light to become part of their design. These weaves have been called “plain weave with defects” (Diana Frost), with floats added in one or both directions to pattern the cloth. We will start the workshop with an introductory lecture on the loom-controlled lace weaves, including Huck, Canvas, Swedish Lace, Lace Bronson, and Spot Bronson. We’ll look at how each structure works, plus setts, materials, and weaving tips. There will be a wide variety of samples and pieces to examine. This workshop is a round-robin, on-loom exploration of lace weaves, huck, canvas, Swedish lace, lace Bronson (Atwater-Bronson lace), and spot Bronson. The looms are warped in different lace drafts, in a variety of fibers, grists, and colors. The treadling options for each loom include simple instructions for the person who is trying the structure for the first time, plus intermediate and advanced instructions for those who are more familiar with the particular structure. If time a permits (it is tight in the 2-day version), a half hour exercise for interested intermediate and advanced weavers will demonstrate a quick trick for transferring a profile tie-up to lace weave tie-ups. At the end, we will cut off the warps and discuss the variety of woven samples. To reserve your spot, please contact Ellen Redman: Ellen.redman1@gmail.com
