- Reflections: 2023 Earth Month Exhibition
2023 Earth Month Exhibition April 5 – 23, 2023 Artists Reception, Wed, April 12 - 5PM-7PM The Umbrella Arts Center Main Gallery Reflections: Listening to Nature Nature is full of reflections produced by light, water, and rocks. It is often the quality of light on a surface, of saturated color, or the whispers of a breeze that invite moments of personal reflection. Instances of being still and watching animals go about their daily activity. When we spend time in nature, how do the arts help us listen and learn? How do we share this experience with others through the arts? It’s common to feel disconnected from the climate change data, yet rebuilding connections between each other and the natural world is essential to sparking collective action. Frequently referred to as a universal language, art can be the bridge between the hard reality of climate change, and the emotions we need to feel to take action. How has the way that we relate to the natural world created this crisis we find ourselves in? When we attune our senses to our local ecosystem, what can we learn? Whether one uses the arts as an outlet, a way to deepen your connections to the environment, or a tool for change, we encouraged our community members to submit artworks responding to the theme Reflections for this year's non-juried Earth Month Exhibit, which will run in The Umbrella Arts Center gallery from April 5 through April 23, 2023. This exhibition featuring more than 100 works was the breathtaking response! https://theumbrellaarts.org/reflections-2023-earth-month-exhibition More about Earth Month at The Umbrella

- Refugee Artisans of Worcester Show: October 8 to October 30, 2022
The Refugee Artisans of Worcester (RAW) helps refugees gain self-sufficiency through the sale of their artwork. With craft as our common language, LexArt brings RAW artisans to our community. 100% of realized gallery sales supports RAW artisans. Worcester is one of 27 cities throughout the US that support the relocation and assimilation of international refugees. Founded in 2010 by Worcester residents Ellen Ferrante and Joan Kariko, Refugee Artisans of Worcester (RAW) is a unique non-profit project that works to support refugees and assist them to self-sufficiency through the sale of their artwork, while archiving their heritage and cultural crafts. RAW artisans originate from the African, Asian and Central American countries of Afghanistan, Bhutan, Burma, Burundi, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guatemala, Honduras, Iraq, Kenya, Liberia, Nepal, Rwanda, Pakistan, Syria and Vietnam. RAW embraces and promotes the cultural diversity of Worcester, recognizes the beauty of the refugee populations’ traditional craft, the economic opportunity that craft practice provides them, the therapeutic value of refugees working with their hands and engaging in their traditional craft in a foreign land, the dignity afforded them as a result, as well as the merits of assimilation given refugees through engaging in the business of producing and marketing their craft, managing their resources and engaging the English-speaking population. RAW works with many (69) non-profits and social services in Worcester. These organizations update RAW on recent refugees and provide contact information for RAW to get in touch with potential artisans. RAW complements the many refugee resettlement programs in the city by seeking community awareness and assistance. LexArt seeks to introduce the RAW non-profit project and its artisans to our community and foster a supportive environment with traditional craft as our common language. We hope it is the first of many such collaborations. One hundred percent of realized gallery sales will support RAW artisans. - Exploring the World of Fibers: January 8 to 30, 2022
“Exploring the World of Fibers!” marks the recent transformation of the LexArt Weavers Guild into the Weaving & Fiber Arts Guild. To celebrate the broadening of their mission, the LexArt artists invited participation from other local and regional weaving guilds and fiber artists. The exhibition “beautifully represents the breadth, vibrancy, and innovation of this region’s fiber artists,” said juror Beth McLaughlin, Interim Director, Artistic Director, and Chief Curator of the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton. McLaughlin stated, “It was a pleasure to serve as juror for Exploring the World of Fibers and to experience the stellar submissions.” “LexArt is turning its focus outward. We are striving to broaden and redefine community, to reach out, engage and be welcoming, to nurture, express and celebrate our collective creativity and humanity,” says Matthew Siegal, Executive Director of LexArt. “We wish to share our facility, our studios, and our beautiful, newly renovated Molly Harding Nye gallery. In support of that mission, the Weavers Guild at LexArt has opened its doors to all the new and exciting developments in the world of fiber arts, to many new friends and members, and to all the potential and opportunity that comes with fostering an inclusive and open environment.” The Weaving & Fiber Arts Guild, co-chaired by Jodi Colella and Pat Pervane, has been a long-time part of LexArt. Historically focused on weaving, the guild is now branching into a variety of other fiber arts. Members are at various stages of their fiber arts journey and have access to a 892 square foot studio at LexArt with a mix of floor, table and tapestry looms, plus all the trimmings. While the guild has been meeting remotely during the pandemic, they look forward to being back in the studio and welcoming new members. “Our members actively participate with the rest of LexArt – collaborating with artists from other guilds, volunteering for organization-wide shows and events, and contributing items for sale in the Nye Gallery and online,” says Pervane. “This exhibition expresses an exciting time for LexArt and the Weaving & Fiber Arts Guild,” states Colella. “The guild now engages members and workshops from all genres of fiber arts including weaving, felting, embroidery, mixed media, dyeing and more. It is a vibrant inclusive group focused on building skills and community. There is a creative curiosity among its members who are eager about learning, interacting with each other and teaching all things fiber.” Photos taken by the artists List of artists and artwork titles: Shari Boraz- Morning Fog Emerges Louise Berliner- Visceral Jodi Colella- Monocle Nyndia Diligent- Missed Jerilyn Heinold- Jewels & Stripes Lauri Hugentobler- Blue Shadows Shawl Anne Pardo- Table Runner Amy Pett- Mysteries of Leaves Amy Pett- Secrets (Big and Little) Rachel Rosenblum- Snuggly Blanket Minna Rothman- Deeper Roots Ellen Solari- January in Hanoi Mihoko Wakabayashi- Indigo Poncho Priscilla Alden- Earth Daughter Priscilla Alden- Journey II Malka Benjamin- Handwoven Personal Bag Susanne Brown- Brown, S Scarf/Vest Merill Comeau- Mother Daughter They Daughter Nancy Crasco- Interstice Jennifer Davies- NIGHT GAZE Eleanor Elkin- Twisted Judith Felton- Indigo Duo Anna Kristina Goransson- In the Drone of Melancholy, an Undeniable Positive Carol Anne Grotrian- Haiku Quartet Kimberley Harding- Pain Containment Pod No. 2 - Left Foot Sarah Haskell- Indigo Nights Sarah Haskell- Bright Island Martha Heller- Indigo Landscape Janet Kawada- Late Night Journey Cindy Kennelly- Diva Dahlia Cindy Kennelly- Party Horns! - Free & Not A Slave: The Legacy of Margaret Tulip to February 5th - 27th, 2022
Free & Not A Slave: The Legacy of Margaret Tulip is a multi-media installation that invites visitors to engage with historic questions about Black history and women’s history through the lens of the arts. Margaret Tulip was an 18th century Lexingtonian with Black and Indigenous ancestry who lived before, during and after the Battle of Lexington. She was a woman, mother, and grandmother who experienced periods of enslavement as a child and adult, followed by legally attaining her freedom, then was “unjustly taken” and re-enslaved by a community member from a prominent family. Margaret pursued her freedom in the courts, lost in the first round, appealed, and won. As LexSeeHer works to make women visible, they are collaborating with LexArt and Lexington Historical Society during Black History Month to launch a year-long exploration of Margaret Tulip's life, her community and her legacy. Works on display include “A Dress For Margaret”, the interactive “Tied To Her Apron Strings”, “I, Too, Am A Child”, “Depositions: For And Against”, “Desk Set”, “Silhouettes” and 2021 Women’s Visibility Banners honoring Sylvia Ferrell-Jones, Leona Martin, and Mary Elizabeth Bibb as well as other African American Lexingtonian women.
