In Celebration of Black History Month In collaboration with LexSeeHer, whose mission is to make women visible, Putting Black Women on the Map, pays tribute to the contributions made by Black women across 300+ years of Lexington history. The exhibition will examine the legacies of Margaret Tulip, a freed slave, re-enslaved, who went to court to win back her freedom, Phebe Banister Burdoo, a free woman of color whose son fought in the battle of Lexington, Mary Elizabeth Miles Bibb, the first African American woman to graduate from the Lexington Normal School, an abolitionist, educator and journalist. Crosscurrents explores the convergence of Chinese and American cultures and how this intersection affects artistic production here in New England. Co-hosted by the Chinese American Association of Lexington (CAAL). LexArt and CAAL share a commitment to providing services that enrich the lives of everyone in Lexington and the surrounding communities. To celebrate the exhibit opening and the Lunar New Year, LexArt and CAAL hosted a festive Chinese New Year Culture Fair on Sunday, January 8. Pioneer Valley Weavers Two-day Workshop, April 22nd and 23rd, 9AM-4PM All levels welcome and accommodated Florence Civic Center, Florence MA (Florence is part of Northampton, where Webs is located) Cost for both days including handout fee, $225. Lace weaves magically allow the weaver to bend the grid, creating holes to allow air and light to become part of their design. These weaves have been called “plain weave with defects” (Diana Frost), with floats added in one or both directions to pattern the cloth. We will start the workshop with an introductory lecture on the loom-controlled lace weaves, including Huck, Canvas, Swedish Lace, Lace Bronson, and Spot Bronson. We’ll look at how each structure works, plus setts, materials, and weaving tips. There will be a wide variety of samples and pieces to examine. This workshop is a round-robin, on-loom exploration of lace weaves, huck, canvas, Swedish lace, lace Bronson (Atwater-Bronson lace), and spot Bronson. The looms are warped in different lace drafts, in a variety of fibers, grists, and colors. The treadling options for each loom include simple instructions for the person who is trying the structure for the first time, plus intermediate and advanced instructions for those who are more familiar with the particular structure. If time a permits (it is tight in the 2-day version), a half hour exercise for interested intermediate and advanced weavers will demonstrate a quick trick for transferring a profile tie-up to lace weave tie-ups. In commemoration of Gloucester’s 400+ and RNAC’s 50th anniversary as a non-profit organization, members were invited to reflect on the past, assess the present through the lens of history and look to the future with fresh eyes. The resulting exhibition, divided into two parts, showcases the work of 73 artists that demonstrates where they have been, are now or are headed in their practice. Each show presents a wide range of artistic interpretations with representational, abstract and expressive styles in all media. Dates: May 19 – June 30, 2023 The Mosesian Center for the Arts invites artists to submit work inspired by movement / dance and sound / music. Dance is a form of storytelling. As the dancers move through space, the story unfolds. The story is told through the movements and the music. Sometimes the story is personal, and sometimes it embodies a culture. MCA seeks work that explores the connections between music, dance, and the visual arts. How does movement and sound translate into visual art? How are movement and sound depicted in visual arts? Mosesian Arts is accepting artworks of all media including video and sound pieces that address connections between dance, music, and the visual arts. Cultures around the world often combine effortlessly the visual in the form of costumes, masks, head adornments, with music and dance. Or artists are inspired in a more direct way by movement and music. Examples range from Matisse’s Jazz series to photographs and drawings of dancers to more abstract representations of sound and movement. The work can be inspired by sound / music and movement / dance. It can be representational or more ephemeral or conceptual in nature. About Mosesian Arts: The Mosesian Center for the Arts is a multidisciplinary arts venue in Watertown, Massachusetts. The 30,000 square foot center, located within a former U.S. Army arsenal, houses a 339-seat main stage theater, a 100-seat black box theater, exhibition galleries, classrooms, and rehearsal studios. Saw tooth hangers and sandwich frames may not be used. Works on paper and smearable mediums such as charcoal and pastels must be protected under glass or acrylic. For framed artwork larger than 24” on the longest side, glass may not be used. Instead, artists must use Plexiglas or comparable acrylic glass. Mats must be white, off white, gray, or other neutral tones. Frames should be neutral colors (white, black, silver, gold, wood). Unframed stretched canvases must have the sides painted or otherwise finished to be integral to the work and must be dry. Submission Fee: $10 per submission. Limit 5 submissions per artist. The Biennial is a juried exhibit of art by people who live or work in the Bedford area. Art and craft in all media has been juried by Jane Deering. Jane Deering, resident of Concord, earned a BA (English) from Regis College and a Post-Baccalaureate from the Courtauld Institute of Art, London UK. From 1999-2004, she organized over 80 art events, travel days and tours to art collections and artist studios in London, Paris and Brussels. She established the Jane Deering Gallery in 2002 on Cape Ann, Massachusetts and directed a West Coast gallery from 2010-2014. The gallery represents emerging and established contemporary artists from the US and Europe. She serves on the Arts & Exhibitions Committee at Concord Art and is a Trustee of the Concord Museum. Deering divides her time between Massachusetts, Santa Barbara CA and London UK. Come and see two of LexArt Members Peter Bain's and Susan St Maurice's artwork that have been accepted into the show. The LexArt Painter's Guild is happy to invite you to a watercolor demonstration by Paul George on Sunday, March 19 at 2 pm. Paul has been painting watercolors and oils for almost 30 years and has been teaching both for about 25 years. He has won numerous awards including an award for excellence from the National Watercolor Society and has won both golds and bronze medals from the New England Watercolor Society. He is a signature member of the New England Watercolor Society, the Rockport Art Association and the Rockport Art Association. Paul and his wife, KT Morse own the George/ Morse Gallery in Ipswich. This event is free and open to the public.

"Sheep to Shawl" is coming to LexFarm this spring! Wildly popular Tufts class coming to Silk Fields Farm (behind LexFarm), taught by Kim Goldinger, local farmer and fiber explorer. Limited spaces available for our spring session on Monday nights, 5-8pm for 6 consecutive weeks, April 3-May 8, plus a special session to participate in the annual alpaca shearing April 23. The classes will start at the farm (weather permitting) and then head over to a private residence on Farm Road for the bulk of class time. We will cover all phases of the fiber process from animal care and shearing to processing and dyeing wool (using a selection of natural dyes) to spinning and knitting to create a final, totally unique product. The class fee will cover: fiber, mordant, dyes, carding and spinning tools. This class is for adults (18+) with a maximum of 10 participants. $250 LexFarm Members, $275 Non-Members. LexArt has been invited to mount an exhibition at Brookhaven at Lexington, a local continuing care retirement community, and home to some of our members! Brookhaven features a lengthy and wide, high-traffic corridor with ample natural light, that it uses to mount exhibits. We are delighted to be able to both share our work with Brookhaven residents and introduce them to your work and to LexArt. The exhibit will be seen by all the nearly 500 Brookhaven residents and their guests. All LexArt members are invited to submit work for consideration. The spring-themed Renewal will run for two months. Brookhaven residents will be asked to vote for their favorite works and prize money will be awarded to the winners. Works may be offered for sale.
